The Cove: exposing the Japanese Dolphin slaughter

Watching the Academy Awards just now, I came across a documentary that made my heart stop. The Cove is a film about the annual killing of dolphins a National Park at Taiji, Wkayama, in Japan. The film highlights that the number of dolphins killed is several times greater than the number of whales killed in the Antarctic, and claims that 23,000 dolphins are killed in Japan every year. The migrating dolphins are herded into a hidden cove where they are netted and slaughtered by means of spears and knives over the side of small fishing boats.

Of course, contributing to this effort is much more complex than simply buying cruelty-free products or adopting an animal from a shelter. This is an issue that needs to get the attention of the American and Japanese governments in order for change to happen.

Here's what we can do:

1. Sign a petition stating that the current dolphin slaughter in Japan is not okay: Text DOLPIN to 44144 to sign the petition straight from your phone
3. See the film! available on DVD and on itunes
2. SPREAD THE WORD: The more people who know, the more people will want to act.

Saving vs Purchasing...

Every time a dog is purchased from a breeder, another dog dies in an animal shelter. U.S animal shelters must put 3 to 4 million dogs and cats to death every year. Meanwhile, dog breeders are breeding more dogs...Dog breeding aggravates the already dire animal overpopulation crisis and contributes to the deaths of homeless animals by encouraging people to buy purebred dogs from breeders and pet stores. Keeping shelter dogs out of early graves is as easy as choosing to adopt from a worthy rescue group rather than buying from a breeder.

I am guilty: I watched the Westminster Dog show last night, and didn't even realize what I was supporting. All dogs are lovable, why do they have to be a "brand name" in order to be loved? It's something we all should think about the next time we think about having a dog in our lives.

Save a life; adopt.

"TOM" seems to be a trend in my posts...

from the moment I saw the first TOMS shoes AT&T commercial I was hooked. For those of you who don't know, TOMS shoes is a company based in Santa Monica Cali who's mission is to end Podoconiosis: a disease that causes extreme swelling, repeated ulcers, and deformity in the legs caused by walking barefoot in silica-rich volcanic soil, where farming is survival. This is a HUGE health problem in many third-world countires, especially in Ethiopia. The worst part is it is COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE!

Here's why TOMS is so honorable: for every pair of shoes bought, they donate a pair to a child in need.

Who wouldn't want to support a mission like that? buy TOMS save a kids life- now that's impact.

I feel like TOMS shoes has alot to do with my last two posts: being a caring consumer. The more concious we are about what buy and what companies we support, the more our voices are heard. Buying Tom's of maine saves animals lives, the same way buying TOMS shoes saves humans lives.

Diversion: Tom's of Maine

So I know I said I would get more in depth regarding animal testing, but my attention has recently been diverted to Tom's of Maine toothpaste! However, it's not really a diversion because Tom's is a brand that supports cruelty-free testing; the first to use alternative methods and get it passed by the FDA actually. I love them. I've used Tom's toothpaste since I was 3 years old. I grew up supporting this bold company and will raise my kids to use Tom's too :)

crulety-free ways of life

Most people I talk too about cosmetic animal testing either don't know, don't care, or care but can't be bothered to change their ways. What bothers me the most is people who say they love animals but don't care that the products they use to make their hair smell nice test harsh chemicals on dogs, cats rabbits and other furry friends. I'll explain more next post!
